LoFi music, Has been gaining popularity for several years now. It is great for studying, doing homework, or background music to do work. It contains elements that are usually regarded as imperfections, low bit-rate/fidelity sounds. These are made deliberately and give this music its characteristic trait. Since the early 1990’s global searches for LoFi music have increased by 4900%.

A search on Spotify yields several playlists for LoFi music. Several of these playlists have millions of views and likes. Part of the appeal of this music is its minimalistic qualities and structure. Parts consist of mostly looped sections with variations. The rise of production gear and software, such as Akai’s MPC and Native Instrument’s Machine, have made the entry points easier for making this style of music.

This music has changed over time and parts of it have been borrowed and incorporated into other music creations. Adam Neely’s new recording for Sungazer has blended elements of jazz fusion, 8-bit, glitch and EDM. Some have even seen jazz musicians or pop musicians incorporate parts of LoFi into the music that they produce.

Although simple in structure, this music does provide a platform for improvisation and expanding of what we think of artistic music. Music needs not be difficult in order to be good, that is in the ears of the listener
