D’Addario has introduced its’ much anticipated synthetic reed, Venn.

Currently available for alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and clarinet the Venn synthetic reed combines the features of a natural cane reed and the durability of a synthetic reed. D’Addario has engineered this reed by layering polymer fibers with resin and reed particles that produce a reed that sounds like a natural cane and lasts. Venn reeds are designed to last 3-6 months when properly cared for.

It should be noted that a 2.5 strength Venn reed is comparable to a 3.0 Legere Signature. Venn reeds come in half-size strengths from 2.0 to 4.0. To compare strengths to the brand you currently use see these strength charts available from D’Addario:

D’Addario has done frequency testing comparing Venn reeds to cane reeds and has found them to be nearly identical. It remains to be seen how players will take to these reeds. Legere has long been the industry leader when it comes to synthetic reeds, but this might feel like or more natural product for players who prefer the feel of a cane reed. Reeds have always been a deeply personal choice and D’Addario has always been a company at the forefront of innovative accessories.
