JK Philanthropy

JK Philanthropy's mission is to help raise funds for organizations that help people. Philanthropy is the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed esp. by the generous donation of money to good causes.  This is our way of giving back to society, people, and in a greater sense the world.  It is also about teaching our children that there are many people in the world that are in desperate need, and that we can do something about it.  Below this paragraph you will see information about organizations we support, and what we are doing to help those organizations.  All of your donations will be made directly to which ever organization you choose to help.  JK Philanthropy does not collect any funds! Thanks for helping us out.

Center for Hospice Care- Established in 1978, Center for Hospice Care is an independent, community based, not-for-profit organization, improving the quality of living through hospice, home health, grief counseling, and community education. This year I am riding in the Bike Michiana for Hospice.  I will be riding 100k on September 11, 2011.  Please make a donation to this great cause by clicking here.

O'Hana has built the first specialty care hospital in Indiana for medically fragile children called A Rosie Place. A home-away-from-home that gives children birth to 21 a temporary place to stay while their family and caregivers get a break from the demands of 24 hour care giving.

We help O'Hana by organizing a annual golf outing.

In one month, I'm going to be riding in the Apple Cider Century.
That's 100 miles of sweating, pushing, giving everything I've got.
Sounds rough, right? Well, imagine doing all of that without clean water.
Every week, millions of women and their children walk more than 14 miles just to get water for their families. Most of this water is contaminated, but it's the only water they have. They take the chance of contracting deadly diarrheal diseases with every sip. There's nothing they can do to change this.
So, what can I do?
My mission is to raise money for water. I want every step to matter. I'm asking for pledges per foot, per mile or flat out donations to help achieve my goal.
The best part: 100% of everything we raise will go straight to building water projects in the field. Then, when the projects are complete, charity: water will show us just where they are and who they're helping (with GPS coordinates, photos and other details). We'll be able to see the communities we've impacted.
I hope you'll join me in helping now.

A high school friend started Starfish Project in Beijing China.  Here is their story:

There are exploited women in every city in the world.
In 2006 a small group of friends began to reach out to the ones who live in our city. We began going into the the streets to visit the girls in the shops.  Week after week we continue spending time chatting with them, taking them out for coffee, throwing birthday parties, and even giving English lessons. We have seen their doubts diminish and friendship begin to grow in its place.

Over time, some of  the girls have come to trust us enough to leave their old life and come into our shelter. Our shelter is not meant to be a permanent residence. Our desire is to see the girls transformed through a loving community. The women in our shelter receive regular counseling where they begin to heal from their past hurts. We provide for them work as alternative means of support, medical checks and consultation, as well as vocational classes to prepare them for the future.

JK Philanthropy will support this organization by helping spread the word about how this organization is changing lives.  Please support Starfish by buying the wonderful jewelry that these women make:  http://www.starfish-project.com/

World Bicycle Relief is dedicated to providing access to independence and livelihood through the power of bicycles.

Founded by SRAM Corporation in 2005 and supported by leaders in the bicycle industry, World Bicycle Relief specializes in large-scale, comprehensive bicycle programs by providing supply chain management, technical knowledge and logistics expertise to poverty relief and disaster recovery initiatives.
Compared to walking, bicycles represent an enormous leap in productivity and access to healthcare, education and economic development opportunities. The simple, sustainable nature of bicycles empowers individuals, their families and their communities.

JK Philanthropy raises money for World Bicycle Relief by logging our GPS cycling and running miles on a site called "Plus 3 Network".  Plus 3 has partnered with corporations to donate money for different charities based on how many miles are logged. You to can raise money on Plus 3 by clicking here.
