My brother-in-law Chad gave me this book for Christmas. It is a great way to force yourself to listen to music you might not normally listen to. I find myself randomly picking a page and then start listening to that entry. Each entry has a short synopsis of why the recording is important and the historical background of each recording. It also has recordings that go well with that entry. At the back of the book they have listening lists....ex. Roadtrip soundtracks. You can visit the books website here: 1000 Recordings To Hear Before You Die

There are two teams (well maybe three teams) that I cheer for in college football, Notre Dame, Florida, and Ball State. I cheer for ND because I grew up in their back yard. Living in Elkhart my whole life has put me a half hour away from ND my whole life. I even was an usher at the stadium for a couple of years. As a kid in Jr. High and High school I had wanted to go to Florida to school. The closest that I got to that is I toured the campus when I was a Freshmen in High School. So I have always cheered for the gators....long before they were national championship calibur, no fair weather fan here!!! Finally I cheer for Ball State, because I went to School there for 2 years, I didn't finish there, but they will always be a team I hope wins. So with that I am very happy with last nights championship!!! Go Gators!!!

It has been a long time since I have posted. I am on this huge Beethoven kick right now. Last month marked the 200th anniversary of the premier of Beethoven's 5th symphony (and less famous 6th symphony). I can't help but wonder will any of our music, today's music, survive as long as Beethoven? Not likely. South Bend Symphony will play Beethoven's 3rd symphony on Jan. 24th. This symphony was originally written in tribute to Napoleon, however after Beethoven learned of his desire to control all of Europe Beethoven crossed his name out so violently that he tore a hole in the score. He renamed the symphony Eroica "Heroic". I'm looking forward to attending this concert. I had a great Christmas and New Years. Not sure quite what my goals are for this year yet, but I think it will be a year of regrowing in music knowledge and interest. I'm also back up to four saxophone students. Looking forward to helping them to grow as musicians.
